WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback is best described as the direct training of the brains electrical activity to improve it's ability to regulate itself. This is accomplished by placing sensors directly on the scalp to monitor the brains electrical activity or EEG. Specific electrical frequencies and scalp locations are identified for training via a thorough assessment process. This information is reflected back to the trainee via a video game display. The trainee scores points in the game whenever that electrical activity is moving towards a more desirable range of frequencies. Over time, and through repetition, the brain eventually learns to improve its own functioning.

This improvement in the brains ability to regulate itself often leads to improvements in sleep initiation and maintenance, reduction of headaches and migraines, reduction in anxiety and depressive symptoms and optimal performance in sports and the performing arts. One of its best researched applications is for enhancing attention and focus for children and adults who have deficits in these areas.

Numerous studies have shown robust improvements in attention and focusing similar to the results seen with stimulant medications without the need to continue active treatment to maintain these gains. The use of stimulants requires the continued use of  medication to maintain these improvements.
